Military Working Dogs Now Have Their Own ‘Walking Blood Bank’ in Iraq

A military working dog handler draws blood from Bubo, a patrol explosive detector dog.
Army Sgt. Jason Salazar, a military working dog handler assigned to the K9 Task Force at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, prepares to draw blood from Bubo, a patrol explosive detector dog, via the canine cephalic vein blood collection process, while Staff Sgt. Michael Jorgensen, a veterinarian technician with the 994th Medical Detachment Veterinary Service, restrains the dog at the veterinary clinic at Role II here Oct. 8, 2020. U.S. troops have drawn blood from the military working dogs in Iraq, tested it and determined their blood type. That sets up a “walking blood bank” for dogs injured in the line of duty, such as Conan, the Belgian Malinois who participated in the raid last year that resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in Syria.

“Military working dog handlers in Iraq recently started a mobile blood bank for working dogs,” Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, said Wednesday in a Twitter post.

The prescreened donors, first reported by Stars & Stripes, are believed to be a first for the dog handlers and their K9s in the region.

“The bank will allow for rapid treatment of injured working dogs” in the field, who are subject to the same risks as the troops they support, including heat exhaustion, OIR said.

In June, Cvoky, another Belgian Malinois, was transferred by medevac from Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia to Camp Arifjan in Kuwait to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Cvoky, an Air Force working dog, received blood from a Navy working dog and quickly recovered, Stars & Stripes reported.

Conan was credited with chasing al-Baghdadi down a tunnel where he detonated explosives to kill himself in the nighttime raid into Syria by special operations units on Oct. 27, 2019, according to U.S. Central Command.

Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, the CENTCOM commander, said later that Conan was injured by live electrical wires during the raid but had recovered. Much of the information on the raid has been classified and it is not known whether Conan had received a transfusion.

On Nov. 25, 2019, Conan made a surprise appearance in the White House Rose Garden with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and first lady Melania Trump.

“The dog is incredible. Actually incredible,” Trump said at the event.

“We spent some good time with it. So brilliant and so smart,” he said, adding that Conan was the “ultimate fighter.”

Three from India’s governing BJP party killed in Kashmir attack

Kashmiri rebel groups have intensified attacks since the region's semi-autonomous status was revoked last year [Mukhtar Khan/AP]
Kashmiri rebel groups have intensified attacks since the region’s semi-autonomous status was revoked last year [Mukhtar Khan/AP]

Suspected separatist rebels have shot dead three members of India’s governing Hindu nationalist party in Indian-administered Kashmir, two days after New Delhi enacted new land laws which the residents decried as a “land grab”.

The attackers on Thursday fired at a car the three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members were using in the southern Kashmir Valley’s Kulgam district.

The three were taken to a hospital, where they died, police said, calling it a “terror attack”.

The BJP says they were members of the party’s youth wing and one was the general secretary of the wing’s Kulgam unit.

In a tweet late on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the killing of his party members. “They were bright youngsters doing excellent work in [Kashmir],” he said.

Modi’s BJP called the killings a “barbaric terror attack”. “Those who are responsible for this will not be spared,” the party posted on Twitter.

Government forces launched a search for the gunmen, police said. Officials did not immediately reveal other details and no rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and both claim the region in its entirety.

Rebels have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989. Most Kashmiri Muslims want the territory to be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.

Thursday’s attack came two days after New Delhi enacted laws allowing any of its citizens to buy land in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The laws have exacerbated concerns from residents and rights groups who say the measures are aimed at changing the demographics of the Muslim-majority region.

Until last year, non-residents were not allowed to buy property in Indian-administered Kashmir.

But in August 2019, Modi’s government scrapped the region’s special status, annulled its separate constitution, split it into two federal territories – Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh – and removed inherited protections on land and jobs.

The move triggered widespread anger and economic ruin amid an unprecedented security clampdown, communications blackout and arrest of hundreds of leaders and activists.

Kashmiri rebel groups have intensified attacks since the region’s semi-autonomy was revoked.

Altaf Thakur, a local BJP spokesman, said the party has lost nine members in rebel attacks so far this year. In July, rebels shot and killed a top regional politician along with his father and brother, who were also party members.

India describes the Kashmiri rebellion as Pakistan-sponsored “terrorism”. Pakistan denies the charge, and most Kashmiris call it a legitimate freedom struggle.

Tens of thousands of civilians, rebels and government forces have been killed in the conflict.
